Learn More About Volkswagen’s TSI Engines
What is Volkswagen TSI?
If you have kept up with improvements to Volkswagen vehicles throughout the past few years, you have probably heard of Volkswagen TSI engines. It is likely you know about TDI Clean Diesel, but you may be wondering about TSI as well. So, what is Volkswagen TSI, exactly? The least complicated answer is that VW TSI engines are the gas equivalent of the TDI engine, offering higher performance with less fuel consumption. Drivers may be aware that their TSI engine is a gas Volkswagen engine, but they may not know how this engine offers advantages over other gas engines.
TSI stands for “turbocharged straight injection” and was inspired by the technology of Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel and FSI direct fuel injection engines. The engine allows for higher torque at lower RPMs, which means more power with less fuel usage. TSI engines combine direct injection and turbocharging to offer impressive power while still providing incredible fuel efficiency.
An example of an efficient, high performing TSI engine can be found in the 2015 Volkswagen Passat. The base model of the Passat is equipped with a 170-horsepower 1.8T 4-cylinder TSI engine which can put out 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Despite this power, the Passat still reaches 24 city and 35 highway miles per gallon due to this state-of-the-art TSI technology.
There are a few different versions of the TSI engine here in the US, mostly the 170-horsepower 1.8T 4-cylinder and 210-horsepower 2.0T 4-cylinder, both which achieve over 180 lb.-ft. of torque (2.0T engines achieve well above this number). The new, soon too be released 2016 Volkswagen Jetta will be equipped with a brand-new 150-horsepower 1.4T 4-cylinder TSI engine that can achieve 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Despite all this power, these engines still offer incredible fuel economy ratings. This means when it comes to either a fun ride or an efficient ride, the Volkswagen TSI engine provides the best of both worlds.
Apart from the 2015 Passat and 2016 Jetta, the TSI engine can also be found in the 2015 Jetta, 2015 Golf, 2015 Golf SportWagen, 2015 CC, and other models.
