How to Change the Battery in a VW Key Fob

Key Fob

Do you need to know how to change the battery in a VW key fob? You should not have to do this very often because your battery should last for several years, but when it needs to be replaced, it is a very simple process. If you prefer to handle your VW key fob battery replacement on your own, we have provided the steps necessary below. Our service department is also here to help.

Which VW Key Battery Do I Need?

The most difficult part of how to change the battery in a VW key fob is determining which VW key battery to use. If you are not sure what your key fob requires, the following information may help.

  • If you drive an older VW vehicle with a fob that looks like a simple Volkswagen car key, you will most likely need to purchase a CR1632 battery.
  • If your vehicle was manufactured after 1999, you probably have a key fob that looks more like a small pod with buttons on one side. It should also have a retractable emergency key. If this is the case, it probably requires a CR2032 Battery.

VW Key Battery Replacement: Five Simple Tips

Replacing the battery in your key fob is simple no matter which VW model you own. Before you get started, you need a couple of supplies. Find a small screwdriver, a new CR2032 battery and a piece of tape. The flathead screwdriver can be wrapped in tape to help minimize damage to the fob. Once you have these items, you’re ready to go.

  1. Hold the button on your Volkswagen key fob until the emergency key pops out.
  2. Make sure you have a firm grasp on the key fob. If you prefer, you can attach it to a small metal key ring that you can hold on your index finger.
  3. Locate the seam which connects the lid and the base of your fob. Use your fingers to begin separating the two. The screwdriver can be used to pry the pieces apart. Be careful during this step because you do not want to scratch the key fob.
  4. Replace the old battery with the new one. Make sure that the positive side faces downward.
  5. Close the remote case tightly to hold everything in place. The replacement process is now complete.

How to Start the Car Without Your Smart Key

What happens if you have somewhere to be and the battery in your smart key is dead? Don’t worry! You can still get where you need to go before replacing the battery.

VW key fobs contain an emergency key or a bayonet key, which can be used without a battery. Even if your car has the keyless entry or a push button start feature, simply holding the emergency key below the ignition should be enough to start the engine.
