Before you choose the family sedan that’s ideal for your trips around Chicagoland, it’s a good idea to do your research. If you’ve already started that process, there’s a good chance you’ve come across the 2017 Volkswagen Passat and 2017 Mazda6 as two solid midsize options. While both offer a lot, the Passat takes the edge in a number of areas. Check out this comparison to find out how, and then make the trip from Evanston to Jennings Volkswagen in Glenview, IL.

Max Performance

The 2017 VW Passat and 2017 Mazda6 both come with a standard four-cylinder engine, but that Mazda6 is the only one offering up more power if you want it:

  • VW Passat – The base engine on the Passat is a turbocharged inline-four. When you want more power, though, you can upgrade to a 3.6L V6 on the SE and SEL Premium to get a total output of 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough power to move from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds, according to Edmunds.
  • Mazda6 – The only available engine on the Mazda6 is a 2.5L four-cylinder that makes just 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. Edmunds says it takes the Mazda6 a full 7.6 seconds to move from 0 to 60 mph.

Standard Features

Both of these sedans come generously equipped with standard features like Bluetooth® phone and audio, a touchscreen infotainment system, a rearview camera, and full power features. However, only the VW Passat base model comes standard with automatic braking, a forward collision mitigation system, and dual-zone automatic climate control. You can get those features on the Mazda6, but only as part of a pricey trim upgrade.
